Advanced Eggshell Carving: Filigree Lace on Rhea
Instructor: Tina Boes
This is a two day class. Email me for available dates.
In this exciting class you will learn how to carve lacey style designs into a Rhea eggshell. Rhea shells are a wonderful medium for carving, as they are somewhat softer to work with. They can be easily carved with a dremel style tool. You can obtain beautiful results that look like you used a higher speed drill.
You will learn how to place your pattern pieces onto the egg and then score the pattern onto it, after which you will learn how to "connect" your design in the open spaces. I will teach you how to use different textures and techniques to get the lacey look, and then students will apply the techniques they favor to their shell. Two Rhea eggs will be supplied for each student, one for practicing techniques and the other for the class project.
Students should bring their own Dremel or similar carving tool to the class. Please ensure you have the correct collet for small 1.6 mm shank dental burs. It will also be very helpful for you to bring some kind of magnifying headset or glasses. Much more detailed work can be obtained using magnification. Students should have carving experience in relief as well as lattice or cut designs.
Pattern pieces will be sent to students before class so they can work out their design ahead of time if they wish.
Continental breakfast and Lunch for the two days is included in the cost of the class.

WHAT QUALIFIES ME AS AN INSTRUCTOR?
Seems since the time I began working full time in my late teens I have always leaned toward wanting to teach others. From working my way up in a short time to positions where I would train other employess, to spending more than a decade traveling the U.S. conducting mass training seminars and workshops for major retail companies. I love to help people learn and it gives me great satisfaction and a level of personal achievement when someone says "Thank you, that really helped me!", and then watching them develop their skills as they go off on their own.
I have conducted classes on Eggshell Carving in many U.S. states through the years as well as Australia, and plan to do more of that in the next couple of years. These types of classes are richly rewarding for me, as well as the student. The possibilities of art forms on eggshells seems to be endless, and I learn from students too. Fresh minds on a new subject always seem to bring up something new to try.
My beginner classes are designed to give you the basic understanding and hands-on experience to be able to go home and start your own creations with the right tools now in your mind and in your hands. Yes, I do successfully teach a basic class in one day. You will have several designs to work with when you leave my classes, even though we work on one design during the class. You will have written materials to take home with you for referencing too!
Personal attention to my students is always in the forefront during my instruction and I have a unique way of monitoring my students during the classes in my home while they carve so I can immediately come to them when I see they might be having difficulties.
So sign up with confidence that you'll be learning from experience!
